AAABC Volunteer Opportunities
 

There are many opportunities at the AAABC where volunteers can use their time, talent, or treasure to assist seniors in our community to improve their quality of life through education, teaching classes, lending a caring ear to someone who just needs to talk, working on an event and much more.

At the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County, (AAABC) the dedication of our volunteers greatly contributes to the heart of what we do for seniors in Broward County. It is thanks to their dedication and contributions of time, expertise, and experience that we are able to offer the following programs.
 

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders)
 

SHINE is a volunteer-based program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and is operated locally through the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County. Specially trained volunteers help Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to understand their health care options. SHINE volunteers are trained to offer free, unbiased, and confidential information and counseling concerning Medicare. Specifically, SHINE volunteers can assist with Medicare complaints and appeals, Part D comparisons, provide resources on available financial assistance programs for those eligible and more.

Minimum volunteer requirements include, but are not limited to:

  •  Be able to pass a Level 2 background screening
  •  Complete required DOEA SHINE training, consisting of eight online modules and one (1) module via Zoom or in-person
  •  Be willing to serve at least twenty (20) hours a month
  •  May not be affiliated with any insurance company, agency, product, or service (including being licensed to sell health insurance)
  •  Have an email account and basic computer skills
  •  Consistently provide unbiased and free counseling assistance to individuals by phone, Zoom, or during one-on-one in-person counseling sessions
     

Health & Wellness Classes
 

These are evidence-based classes which cover a range of health-related topics. Volunteer instructors are needed to provide the classes in person and virtually. Volunteers will be paid a stipend per class. Click here for details on each class option below:

  •  Diabetes Self-Management Program
  •  Tai Ji Quan
  •  Tai Chi for Arthritis
  •  Powerful Tools for Caregivers
  •  Powerful Tools for Caregivers
  •  Savvy Caregiver
  •  A Matter of Balance

Volunteer commitment includes:

  •  Level 2 background check
  •  Series commitment – an average of 1 – 2.5 hours a week for 6 – 12 weeks
  •  All classes require certifications or training, which will be provided to you at no cost
     

ConnectingWithU
 

This program is a free, telephone reassurance service that provides emotional support for seniors living in Broward County. Volunteers are paired with seniors and provide regularly scheduled check-in calls.

Volunteer commitment includes:

  •  Have access to a phone, computer, and the internet Have an email account and basic computer skills, including working in Excel, Microsoft Word, and Email (receiving and able to open attachments and send weekly call list updates)
  •  Be willing to commit to a minimum of three months
  •  Call and speak with each assigned senior a minimum of once a week
  •  Be at least 18 years of age and living in Broward, Miami-Dade, or Palm Beach County
  •  Able to make calls Monday - Saturday (any mix of the days is fine) between the hours of 9am - 5pm. Calls can be made at your convenience but not at night or on Sunday.
  •  Successfully completing the online volunteer training
