Individuals aged 60 and older are one of the most vulnerable populations affected by hunger. Millions of older Americans are not able to prepare proper meals or do not have access to transportation to pick up groceries or supplies.

Under the Older Americans Act, nutrition assistance programs are available to reduce hunger for the elderly. These nutrition programs connect older participants with support services including transportation, home-health aides, and home modification and food assistance programs.

Good health is closely linked to diet. When an elderly person reduces food intake due to health problems or financial restrictions, they in fact risk their ablitiy to maintain independent, healthy lifestyles.

Broward Meals on Wheels administers the Federal Older Americans Act's Title III-C nutrition programs throughout Broward County. Meals are provided in both Congregate Dining and Home Delivered Meals Programs.

The Congregate Dining Program seeks elderly who cannot afford to eat adequately, who lack skills and knowledge to select and prepare well-balanced meals, who have limited mobility either to shop or cook for themselves, or who have feelings of loneliness and rejection that have deprived them of the incentive to cook for themselves.

The Home Delivered Meals Program provides meals for Broward elders who are homebound. Priority is given to seniors who are isolated and living alone.

Kosher meals are available in both programs, and nutrition education and in-home assessments are also offered.

Because Broward County has one of the largest populations of Seniors in the country, Broward Meals on Wheels is one of the largest Meals on Wheels agencies.
